The first webinar in a series organized by the ICRC Missing Persons Project focused on the Triggers, Challenges and Benefits in setting up Family Associations. Selami Hoti, Deputy head of SHGV-KRUSHA (Widowed women Association-KRUSHA), in Kosovo, Fidensia Ladu, from the Juba Widows Association in South Sudan, Abba Weldeselassie Tesfay Adagish, priest of the Catholic Church in Ethiopia and Nilda L. Sevilla President of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD) in the Philippines shared their personal stories and experiences in setting up and leading family’s associations in their respective contexts. The webinar series started by discussing this topic because establishing family associations is often the first stage of organized action. However, as explained by the panelists, the challenges in getting together can be multiple: from the physical geographic distance, to unfavorable political and cultural environments, and lack of economic and psycho-social support.
