The Committee of Relatives of Disappeared Migrants of El Progreso, Honduras (COFAMIPRO) was established in September 1999 as an initiative of the radio program 'Sin Fronteras,' now known as 'Abriendo Fronteras,' which airs on Radio Progreso.
The Committee was formed through efforts in organization, training, and communication. Our initial actions included protesting in front of the United States embassy against the mistreatment of undocumented migrants. We also called upon the Honduran Ministry of Foreign Affairs for greater support in the search for missing migrants.
Faced with the indifference of the state, we decided to take the initiative to search for our relatives and organized the first Caravan of Relatives of Migrants in December 1999, which reached the border between Mexico and Guatemala.
We demanded, and together with other organizations, achieved the creation of a special fund to finance the repatriation of the bodies of migrants who had died during their journey to the United States.
