Every year, thousands of migrants and refugees try to reach Europe. The response of the European Union (EU) and its member states has been to invest in surveillance technology, security forces and detention centres with one overriding aim: to construct an impenetrable fortress at Europe’s borders to keep people out. This report describes some of the key elements of the EU’s migration policy and how this policy plays out at the EU border where Bulgaria and Greece meet Turkey, one of the main routes used by Syrian refugees seeking safety in the EU.
