The event seeks to acknowledge the plight of missing persons and the challenges faced by their families- with a specific focus on the fate of missing migrants. It further aims to promote a coherent and effective African approach to the issue through a call to put in place a Common African Position (CAP) on missing migrants.

Specifically, the organizers hope to work towards a high-level commitment from the African Union Commission to make the commemoration of the International Day of the Disappeared part of the African Union’s official calendar. Together with the Vice President of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR), the ICRC and the AUC want to underline the importance of the adoption, by the ACHPR, in 2021 of Resolution 486 on missing migrants and refugees in Africa and the impact on their families . Together with the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and its Objective N°8 on “Saving Lives and establishing coordinated international efforts on missing migrants” this resolution provides key principles that should inform a pan-African approach to the humanitarian tragedy of missing migrants.

The event starts at 13:30 EAT
