The issue of missing and forcibly disappeared persons in Lebanon remains an open wound, deeply affecting thousands of families who have never ceased demanding their right to know the fate of their loved ones. On the occasion of the International Day of the Disappeared, proclaimed by the United Nations on August 30th of each year, we want to plant the "Tree of the Missing" in honor of these victims, to commemorate their memory and to support their families. We chose the olive tree as it symbolizes generosity and life, as well as the strength and determination of the families of the missing, who have persistently sought the truth about their loved ones for 42 years. We want the "Tree of the Missing" to be a lasting symbol of hope and true peace. We also want it to serve as a reminder of the necessity of striving for justice and reconciliation. With the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross, we will plant eight olive trees at the following locations:
August 9 in Zahle
August 13 in Bebnine and Tripoli
August 21 in Benwati
August 23 in Azzounieh
August 26 in Kamid el-Loz
August 30 in Beirut (Beirut Port)
August 30 in Beirut (Gebran Khalil Gebran Garden)
We hope that the "Tree of the Missing" will be an essential step towards achieving greater solidarity and support for the families of the missing and for enforcing the Law on the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared (Law 105/2018).
And the planting will continue...
